Science Fiction

Fantasy and Science Fiction

When evaluating science fiction and fantasy for children we must consider that even though the book has some fantasy aspects, the characters must act in a way that children will feel they are real and behave just like them. Of course, like on Earth, the fantasy world must follow certain rules. The authors must carefully incorporate themes that are consistent with the lives of the students.

Science fiction is an excellent sub-genre that can provide entertainment for all readers. Books may fall under apocalyptic or post apocalyptic categories. They are filled with action, for the characters are concerned with survival and the dangers of the world they live in.

Steampunk, Cyberpunk, and Biopunk can appeal to those readers who love steam machines, computers or hacking, and the manipulation of human DNA or use of viruses.

For those who enjoy romantic novels with a dreamy prince as a character but still crave action, there is love dystopia under the science fiction category.  Usually, these books take place in a world in which the citizens are constantly controlled but the main character chooses to fight the government.
Extra-sensory perceptions is for those readers who have always imagined or wished they had super powers. The characters may enjoy the super natural powers such as telepathy, clairvoyance,  and knowing the future.

Students will certainly enjoy books about robots, androids, or artificial intelligence, or extraterrestrial. They will find amazing characters and surprising plots filled with adventure.
Science fiction includes books about time travel and parallel universes. Science fiction is a great sub-genre for students who love movies like Back to the Future. They will find time machines and get to experience other universes or time periods.

Once again, science fiction can meet the needs of all readers. If students enjoy gaming, they might enjoy virtual reality or gaming books. They can step into a virtual world and be part of conspiracies, wars, and even drama.

Because there are books that may not fall under any other category under science fiction and are considered “miscellaneous,” librarians must be familiar with all categories. It is important to know all this, because students may not be interested in robots but like zombies. With this knowledge and excellent reference interviewing skills, we can provide students with books that might interest them.
Another reason librarians must know the different categories that fall under science fiction is to recommend to teachers, so they may use them in their lessons. I have NEVER seen a teacher incorporate a science fiction novel in her lesson. I am sure students would have a blast!
